The Strategy Sessions Podcast
Episode Title: Growing a High Value LinkedIn Network
Host: Jeremy Birt
Guest: Sean Matthews
Jeremy (Host):
If you're trying to grow your network and boost your LinkedIn profile, then this conversation is going to be gold for you. Today I'm talking to Sean Matthews. He's going to share how he’s grown his network to over 23,000 connections and followers. You're watching The Strategy Sessions. I'm your host, Jeremy Burt—leadership coach and mentor to executives and businesses looking for strategic support to reach their full potential fast.
Mr. Sean Matthews, welcome. Great to have you on!
Sean (Guest):
Thanks, Jeremy. Great to be here—and great to be on The Strategy Factory podcast.
Jeremy:
Let me start with your bio. I’ll read it out and you let me know if there’s anything you’d like to change.
Sean Matthews is a business builder, networker, and problem solver with extensive leadership experience across multiple industries. He now specialises in technology transformation and change within the aged care and healthcare sectors.
With over 30 years of experience in sales and marketing leadership across B2B distribution, Sean has helped organisations grow in areas like business development, sales, marketing, procurement, and operational excellence—especially within the aged care and healthcare industries.
He also launched the Inner Zone podcast in 2020, capturing the voices of leaders in the aged care sector during a period of immense change.
Sean’s innovative approach and deep commitment have not only shaped the industries he serves, but also helped him build a powerful LinkedIn network of over 23,000 contacts and followers.
How did I do?
Sean:
Yep, that’s excellent! [Laughs]
Jeremy:
23,000 followers, mate! That’s LinkedIn glitterati status, isn’t it?
Sean:
Yeah, it’s great, but it’s been built over many years. I started using LinkedIn early—probably one of the early adopters in Australia. LinkedIn launched in 2003, but I joined in 2008. Initially, I just used it to connect with people across industries and build my network.
Jeremy:
So when you got started, was growth your goal from day one?
Sean:
Not exactly. I just saw it as a tool to connect with people in different sectors and build awareness. Later on, I started thinking more strategically about growth. Now, people follow me mostly because of the content I share—it has impact and value.
Jeremy:
How closely do you track your results?
Sean:
I look at impressions and engagement, but it’s a lot of trial and error. Some posts work, some don’t. It’s important to be consistent—whether that’s videos, industry insights, or commenting on others’ posts to expand your reach.
Jeremy:
What are the key things that drive engagement?
Sean:
Authenticity is huge. People want real voices, not overly polished content. Content needs to provide value. I’ve had moments where a video I filmed in my car had more impact than something polished in an office.
Jeremy:
Have you ever had negative feedback?
Sean:
Sure, but I see all feedback as useful—even criticism. Often it comes from people who wouldn’t dare post themselves. I just see it as part of putting yourself out there.
Jeremy:
Let’s talk cadence—how often should you post?
Sean:
They say the best time is around 8–8:30 a.m. The day matters less than the quality of your content. I do videos about movement and health, or reflections from work. One guy told me he started exercising again after seeing one of my gym videos—that’s powerful.
Jeremy:
What’s your take on unsolicited connection requests?
Sean:
They’re fine if it’s part of your strategy—but expect some rejection. More importantly, give before you ask. If you lead with value, relationships will follow. If you’re just trying to sell, people will tune out.
Jeremy:
Do you use voice messages?
Sean:
Absolutely. They’re super impactful. People hear your tone and authenticity—it cuts through the noise. I’ve used it a lot, including with you, I think!
Jeremy:
Yes, you have! And that authenticity—you’ve mentioned that a few times. It’s clearly key.
Sean:
It is. I want people who meet me in real life to say, “You’re exactly how you come across online.” That’s what I aim for.
Jeremy:
So how have you leveraged your network?
Sean:
Massively. I haven’t needed recruiters in years. I get business and job opportunities directly through connections. I’ve even seen technicians land roles by DMing CEOs directly. LinkedIn’s power is incredible when used with intent.
Jeremy:
And for people scared to post a video?
Sean:
Just do it. No one likes the sound of their own voice—but getting uncomfortable is how you grow. People aren’t looking for perfect—they’re looking for real.
Jeremy:
What are you experimenting with now?
Sean:
AI is big. I use tools like Publer—but I always rewrite to make it sound like me. AI can save time, but it shouldn’t replace your voice.
Jeremy:
Any hacks you’d recommend?
Sean:
Yep—when posting, try to be the first to comment on influential people’s posts. You’ll get exposure to their audience. I commented on Jim from Jim’s Mowing the other day—he replied, and it snowballed from there.
Jeremy:
That’s a great tip.
Sean:
Also, don’t just like posts—comment meaningfully. It helps the algorithm and builds credibility. LinkedIn is an ecosystem that rewards thoughtful engagement.
Jeremy:
Do you pay for LinkedIn Premium?
Sean:
Yes, and I think it’s worth it. I’ve had it for years—it gives me insight into who’s viewing my profile and allows InMail messages. It’s not essential, but it’s valuable if you’re serious about growth.
Jeremy:
Could someone grow without it?
Sean:
Sure, but it’s harder. You just have to be more strategic and consistent.
Jeremy:
Final tips?
Sean:
Start now. Don’t wait until you need a job—by then it’s too late. Build your presence, showcase your contributions, and engage your network.
Jeremy:
Sean, it’s been a blast. Thanks for being so open and sharing so much wisdom.
Sean:
Thanks, Jeremy. I’ve really enjoyed it.
Jeremy:
